The Carlson XE range of products comprises a comprehensive series of high performance filter sheets designed to meet the needs of a range of specialist applications.

All filter sheets within the XE range are formulated with several important benefits in mind:

• To achieve superior filtration capabilities in conjunction with excellent wet and dry handling characteristics  - achieved by incorporating an advanced blend of selected and processed bleached cellulose fibres combined with non-hazardous filter aids and approved resins
• To ensure compatibility with beverages and food products - achieved by using only selected compliant raw materials
• To ensure that the different grades can be used in the same filter press configuration and seal thickness - achieved by manufacturing to carefully controlled thickness specifications
• To reduce edge leakage to a minimum - achieved through the special XE filter sheet formulation and processing conditions.

XE filtration sheets are widely used in the filtration of products where they give outstanding clarity and stability combined with long sheet life and integrity.

Typical applications of the XE range include filtration of wines, beers and lagers where long life, sterility, stability and clarity are essential. Similarly, XE products have found wide acceptance in the filtration of syrups for soft drinks, gelatines and cosmetics.

Product Details:

Depth filter sheets are used to remove particles from liquids. This means that liquids can be clear-, fine- or sterilization-filtered. For depth filtration filter media of a thickness of 2.5–4.5 mm are required. The particles are retained using two filtration principles: 1. surface filtration and 2. depth filtration. The liquid flows through a three-dimensional, asymmetrical fiber network in the depth filter. The solid components are retained using mechanical and electrokinetic effects. This significantly increases the absorption capacity. The purpose of a filtration process is to produce either a liquid (filtrate) or solids (retentate). Depth filtration focuses mainly on the production of liquid filtrate. Formats are available from 6 cm round to 2.425 m x 1.215 m square. Practically every format in between is possible, which means they can be installed in any commercially available sheet filter. Depth filter sheets have a particle absorption capacity of up to 4 kg/m2 . Furthermore, any available filter sheet grade is available as lenticular module (FILTRODISC™, see brochures for DISCSTAR™ and FILTRODISC™ modules). PURAFIX® depth filter sheets have been specifically developed for the use in critical applications such as the processing of biopharmaceutical products. They are characterized by their extremely low levels of ions and pyrogens.

PROC 3 RANGE OF CARBON FILTER SHEETS

Activated carbon powder has been used in filter sheets for many years, primarily for colour removal from low grade sugar syrups and for chlorine removal from water to be used in soft drinks production.

The number of applications using cellulose sheets incorporating activated carbon has escalated, not only in variety, but also because of their convenience. Because process fluids contact carbon particles entrapped within a filter sheet more efficiently, the adsorption capability of these impregnated sheets is greater than that provided by an equivalent amount of bulk powdered activated carbon thus reducing process time and increasing product yield.

The sheet life depends on the amount of colour / odour / off-taste / chlorine to be removed and the dwell time of the liquid within the sheet.

All sheet grades are available with protective backing papers if required. All carbon lenticular modules incorporate backing papers.
